The deeper purpose of Ms. Ciciovan’s art is to create a visual concerto of colors, emotions and vibrations, that put the audience in a dream-like state. Before knowing anything about the artist herself, her work sparked in me a feeling of delicious illusion just like when one observes a landscape during a foggy orange sunset in the summertime. So, mission accomplished!

There is a curious similarity between the trajectories of Romanian-Canadian painter and visual artist Mona Maria Ciciovan and Constantin Brâncuşi (1876-1957), known for his famous Endless Column. Both were born to peasants in small Romanian villages, and both dabbled in the arts in solitude at a young age. Brâncuşi is considered a pioneer of modernism and a patriarch of modern sculpture. Ciciovan’s painting is a continual search in the world of her memory and imagination; she creates purified landscapes that in essence are games of shadows and light.

M.M. Ciciovan's abstract style is born of both control and abandon. Pentru ediția din acest an (23-26 aprilie) a Artexpo New York – prima la care a luat parte – pictorița Mona Mariana Ciciovan a pregătit anume o serie de noi lucrări, reunite sub titlul „Păsările paradisului”. De dimensiuni mari (241cm/91cm fiecare), acestea răsfață ochiul privitorului cu o cromatică bogată și ingenios armonizată, caracteristică stilului personal al artistei. Un singur tablou mai vechi, datând din 2007, a fost expus la Salon – „Center Park ”– fiind „un clin d’œil adus New York-ului.”

Orice artist are nevoie de un spațiu de creație în care să se regăsească, de un “chez soi” care să îi cuprindă visurile, gândurile și munca de fiecare zi. Al pictoriței Mona Mariana Ciciovan este Espace MARA, un loc scăldat în auriul soarelui și verdele foșnitor al copacilor, la fel de falnici precum cei din satul de demult al copilăriei. Și fiindcă vorbim de origini, să spunem și că aniversarea primului an de la inaugurarea Espace MARA coincide cu împlinirea unui proiect tare drag artistei: începând din această lună, picturile ei vor fi prezentate pentru prima oară iubitorilor de artă din România, în cadrul unei galerii din București.

De ces vues urbaines qui la fascinent, l'artiste affiche sa volonté d'en capter les perceptions nais- santes comme si elles se formaient en une fraction de seconde dans notre œil et dans notre esprit. En des tons de terre, de rouge, d'orangé, d'ocre et de doré servis par un graphisme nerveux - on pense à des branches d'arbres que couvriraient des écrans de couleur - ses compositions associent voiles translucides et couches de peinture liquide. L'application, non sans coulures, se fond à des réseaux graphiques faits d'entrecroi- sements verticaux et horizontaux, de carreaux, de losanges, d'arcs à la géométrie déformée qui semblent étirer l'espace. L'ambition de ces œuvres à la peinture à l'huile est de modifier la vision traditionnelle accolée au paysage urbain qu'elles suggèrent. Et il est vrai qu'il y a ici une façon d'embrasser et d'inscrire l'espace pour mieux le circonscrire. Les toiles ont quelque chose qui appa- raît à la fois spontané et structuré...

Pictoriţa Mona Mariana Ciciovan este singurul artist din provincia Québec care ia parte la ediţia din acest an a Boston International Fine Art Show (13-16 noiembrie), eveniment de prestigiu în lumea artelor plastice de pe continentul nord-american. De altfel, ea este unul dintre cei doi artişti care îşi expun aici „pe cont propriu” lucrările, marea majoritate a participanţilor fiind galerii de artă (peste 40) din Statele-Unite, Canada şi Europa.La această a 18- a ediţie, artista prezintă 15 lucrări personale, cele mai multe realizate în ultimii doi ani. Singurele picturi mai vechi expuse în cadrul evenimentului sunt cele din ciclul Mioriţa, pe care artista îl consideră reprezentativ pentru demersul ei artistic.

In crossing from one portrait to the other, the viewer enters a world of images evoking cityscapes and waterfronts, bridges and trees—city trees. It is a world of majestic silence conveyed through the geometric elements of monumental structures, yet there is a certain music in the rhythmic representation of some figures, as in a fugue, sometimes through repetition, sometimes through inversion. The artist seems to move across the canvas, taking the viewer with her, like a pianist through the keyboard, always in the flow of the moment. The viewer has the sense of looking fleetingly at the world through a kaleidoscope or a crystal at twilight—a time of day when everything briefly turns to gold.
